Made famous by author James A. Michener, who declared it “the most beautiful island in the world,” Bora Bora is the quintessential island paradise. Sand-fringed motus (small islets) on a coral reef dot its perimeter, enclosing a turquoise lagoon. With only one navigable pass, its crystal-clear water is home to an abundance of tropical ocean life in a kaleidoscope of colours. On a thin, flat coastal strip, most of Bora Bora’s 4,000-some inhabitants reside, many around the small port of Vaitape.
